Measurement report: Saccharide composition in atmospheric fine particulate matter during spring at the remote sites of southwest China and estimates of source contributions

Abstract. Based on source-specific saccharide tracers, the characteristics of biomass burning (BB) and biogenic emissions saccharides were investigated in three rural sites at Lincang, which is 65 % covered with forest southwest border China. The total accounted for 8.4 ± 2.7 organic carbon (OC) 1.6 0.6 PM2.5. measured anhydrosugars 48.5 saccharides, among levoglucosan was most dominant species. high level both attributed to local BB activities combustion smoke transported from neighboring regions Southeast Asia (Myanmar) northern Indian subcontinent. mono- or disaccharides sugar alcohols 24.9 8.3 26.6 9.9 respectively, proved be mostly emitted by direct volatilization plant material surface soils rather than byproducts polysaccharide breakdown during processes. Five sources resolved non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) analysis, including BB, soil microbiota, senescence, airborne pollen, detritus contributions 34.0 %, 16.0 21.0 23.7 5.3 respectively. results provide information magnitude as well characteristic remote China, can further applied regional source apportionment models global climate models.
